Radiant floor (RF) heating systems offer a comfortable, healthy and
efficient way to heat. Hydronic heating creates a more energy-efficient
structure by reducing infiltration losses. RF reduces energy use by only
heating the lower half of the room. Savings multiply when RF is assisted
by solar thermal.
System Designs:
There are two categories of radiant floor
installations, wet and dry.
- WET refers to ground floor installations. (Typically new construction)
- DRY is in reference to a second story installation. (Typically a retrofit
to an existing structure)

Radiant Floor Heating System Advantages:
- Efficient Heat Distribution System that that takes advantage of the
whole floor to heat a space, as opposed to forced air coming out of a
small vent to heat a huge space.
- Up to 30% reduction in operating costs compared to a standard
forced air heating system
- Eliminates the need for blowers and vents, providing heat without
creating noise or circulating airborne particles (dust, mold, pollen,
allergens etc…)
- Low maintenance, no ducts to clean or filters to change
- Efficiently controlled heat on a room-by-room or zone-by-zone basis
with the VersaCor Distribution System.
- Aesthetic Value because it is a virtually invisible system
- Provides continuous, perfectly uniform heating
How a Radiant Floor (RF) System Works:
- Hot water is run through tubing that is either attached under the
floor or embedded in the concrete slab.
- The hot water running through the tubing warms the floor and radiates
heat into the structure.
- By heating the floor, a thermal inversion is created that traps cool
air at the ceiling and circulates warm
air where you are.
Types of Tubing:
- Non-Oxygen Barrier PEX Pipe
Tubing
- Least expensive
type of tubing
- For use
in systems that do not have
any “ferrous” metals
- Oxygen Barrier Tubing
- Twice as
expensive as Non-Barrier
pipe
- For use
in systems that have cast-iron
compounds
- I-PEX Tubing
Heat Source Options:
The following boilers are used either as stand alone systems or in combination with a solar thermal system.
- Condensing Boilers
- Efficiency over
92%
- Made with stainless
steel or aluminum
- Instantaneous Water Heaters
- Primarily used
for small applications,
otherwise
not generally recommended
- Wood Boilers
- Wood is a renewable resource often appropriate in rural locations.
- Solar Thermal
- Solar thermal collectors as a supplement can add a free source of energy - the sun.
